Cannabis Sativa has widely been used as a medicine by humans for centuries. With the legalization of cannabis taking place around the world, scientists are finally being able to research the medicinal side of cannabis further. New findings are literally being made every day and research and development are only in its infancy.
Small compounds known as cannabinoids are what makes marijuana medicine. The cannabis Sativa plant contains over a hundred cannabinoids, but we will just be outlining two main ones. Most people today are aware of THC ( tetrahydrocannabinol ) the principal psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis. THC is responsible for the stoner high and has many medicinal benefits. Another less commonly known cannabinoid is CBD ( Cannabidiol ). CBD is the non-psychoactive compound in cannabis and is mainly used as an extract in the form of a multitude concentrated cannabis oils available on the market today. It has been widely used as a medicine to treat specifically, seizures, but many other medical conditions.
Both THC and CBD are found throughout the cannabis Sativa plant in varying quantities depending on the cannabis strain. Cannabis strains such as Charlottes Web and Cannatonic are well known for being high in the cannabinoid CBD. Cannabis’s cousin, “hemp”, is being used to extract large quantities of the cannabinoid CBD. Essentially cannabis high in CBD has only medicinal properties but with no ‘high’ or psychoactive effects.
A young girl, Charlotte Figi, was suffering from hundreds of seizures a month for many years. After trying many typical medical diets, drugs and procedures it was recommended Charlotte was induced into a clinical coma to give her body a rest from the symptoms and trauma! After her parents realized there was another more promising avenue of reducing seizures in their daughter,
they got in contact with some well-known cannabis breeders. Charlottes Web was a strain specifically designed by the 6 Stanley brothers from Colorado, USA, to treat epileptic seizures, and named after Charlotte Figi. Since then Charlottes Web has become a household name in medical
cannabis and one of the most popular strains on the market.
CBD has been studied a fair amount in recent years due to the success in the treatment of patients and easier access to medical marijuana. Although these studies are not sanctioned by governments, the proof is in the pudding as well over 50% of patients experienced a massive reduction in seizures using derivatives of CBD, either flowers, oils or concentrates. The American Epilepsy Society (AES) found that CBD was effective in reducing both the frequency and severity of seizures through studies conducted nationwide since 2014.
No one can really answer why CBD reduces the number of seizures. But the physical proof is out there, assisting many children and adults around the world to live a better life. CBD has already been regulated in over 20 countries for medical purposes. And hopefully, with further controlled studies we will find the answer as to why cannabis is such a great medical gift.
